At Air Duct Solutions, we provide fire and smoke damper inspections per code requirements and assist you with keeping your facility in compliance with local and state building codes. 2. Follow up inspection 1 year after installation for all facilities.

  3. Follow up inspections every 4 years thereafter in non-healthcare facilities; every 6 years in hospitals and healthcare facilities.

  4. Locate and operate (actuate) all fire dampers and smoke dampers in your facility, removing and resetting the fusible link to verify the damper fully closes and locks.

  5. Visibly label dampers for reference on all documentation and custom integrated with your facilities’ Asset Management Program.

  6. Marking of damper location on detailed drawings or CAD plotted diagrams.

  7. Manually activate/operate electric smoke dampers and pneumatic smoke dampers to ensure that the actuator is operable, verification that the unit fully opens and closes.

  8. Clean and lubricate dampers, as required by manufacturers.

  9. Provide customized documentation listing all code required information: location of damper(s), damper numbers, whether the damper passed or failed, detailed reason for failure or additional information for your facility.

Facility Manager Challenges

  1. Most fire dampers are installed in areas of the building or facility that are not often easily accessible. They are installed in penetrations of fire rated walls and floors as required by the building construction code and damper access is normally through a relatively small access door.
  2.
  3. Fire dampers are typically very difficult to test and reset due to their design (dynamic fire dampers as well as static fire dampers).
  4.
  5. Unfortunately, the limited access and damper closure springs do not make dynamic fire dampers testing, inspection and maintenance easy, regardless facilities meeting installation standards. Fire dampers are only guaranteed to close only if properly applied and installed exactly as manufacturers specify.
